Missionaries and Strangers

Missionaries and Strangers

3rd John 1-8

Notes from my bible:

5 Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren and for strangers, 6 who have borne witness of your love before the church. If you send them forward on their journey in a manner worthy of God, you will do well, 7 because they went forth for His name’s sake, taking nothing from the Gentiles. 8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we may become fellow workers for the truth. 3 John 5-8

3 John 5-8 CSBT

。 3 John 5-8

Verses 5-8 is of service, of good works shown through faith in Christ.

In whatever we do, we must do it faithfully for the brethren and for the stranger as well, who have borne witness of our love before the church. (17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Colossians 3:17)

Who are our brethren? Those with whom we have contact and fellowship with. Those whom we know to be missionaries, pastors, teachers of the Word of God, and others who are involved in ministry.

Who are the strangers? Those who are doing the same thing as mentioned above (who are our brethren?) but we do not know them like we know our brethren.

These have borne witness of our love, just like Gaius before the church.

Thus in our involvement in the kingdom of God we send them forward on their journey to deliver the gospel of Jesus Christ in a manner worthy of God, we will do well because they went forth for His name’s sake, taking nothing from anyone.

We therefore out to receive such, that we may become fellow workers for the truth.

V8 tells us that by supporting missionaries, we are also fellow workers with them, even if we do not go to the field. We are told to receive them into our homes.

How do we support them? By prayer, sending funds, sending bibles, teaching materials, or whatever they request so they will be able to continue in the ministry that God has called them in.

What about the stranger? When they come in to talk about their ministry, we are to support them the same if they hold fast to the doctrines or teachings of God and His word.

Our circle of influence isn’t only for those we know and are comfortable with helping, but also with those who are seeking support for their God given calling.

Now, we are not to be naïve about this. We are to test the spirit to see if what they are doing is in fact from God and not for selfish reasoning and gain. (1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1 John 4:1)
